early life, until the age of eight, was spent in a nomadic lifestyle,
with the daily pursuit of food and shelter a never ending cycle...
This background gave me cultural and spiritual ties to the Inuit
way of life and a sense of spirit of place... I no longer speak
my mother tongue, yet I need to do my part in carrying on the
stories, cultural myths, and legends and spiritual legacy of
our people... I have chosen to be a storyteller for my people
through the medium of sculpture."

Abraham Anghik Ruben, born in 1951 near Paulatuk, Nunavut, is one of Canada's foremost Inuit artists whose work in stone shows unique imagination and talent. While continuing to explore themes of spiritualism and shamanism, inspired by his great grandparents who were both legendary shamans, he has recently also chosen to portray his more immediate family and people who have made an indelible impression on him. Personal, autobiographical, and drawing inspiration from the regained cultural identity which he had lost during his education at a residential school in Inuvik, Anghik Ruben's sculptures often express deep felt emotions and tap into universal feelings of joy, sadness, despair, and hope. A recent solo museum exhibition at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Abraham Anghik Ruben, September 16, 2001 March 3, 2002, reveals the work of a maturing artist entering a new phase in his career. This exhibition at Images of the North, his first since the one man show at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, is particularly noteworthy and includes some of the sculptures that were shown at the museum and illustrated in the exhibition catalog. We are delighted to be presenting an extensive collection of Anghik Ruben's work as well as offering an unusual opportunity to acquire a sculpture recently exhibited at one of the foremost museum venues for Inuit art.
